The purpose of the Sustainability in the Food Chain is to initiate and exploit research relevant to environmental and economic sustainability of the food chain and to implement special standards, e.g. organic ones.
This sector is facing rapidly evolving competitive pressures and business opportunities around a host of issues ranging from climate change to public health to consumer transparency. Using natural resources sustainably in agriculture, manufacturing, retail and distribution promoting fair producer livelihoods are just some of the issues that have become critical business concerns for the sector – not only in terms of corporate responsibility to society. Though sustainable production of food is a key issue to master central development goals.
